How to Care for Your Teeth?

How to care for your teeth

brushing teeth daily

At Bella Dental, we love helping our patients achieve the smile they love. In between visits to the dentist, we have the following advice for how to care for your teeth at home.

Brush twice daily

Why is it essential to brush your teeth twice a day? Microbes grow continuously on your teeth, even if you haven’t consumed anything, they are always present. They grow with time and create a sticky plaque that attaches to your teeth like glue.

Therefore it is important to brush twice daily, morning and night to remove this sticky plaque before it has a chance to harden and can only be removed by your dental providers. Brushing in the morning also helps get rid of bad morning breath.

Brushing during the evening helps to remove the sugars which feed the microbes while you sleep.

Floss daily

How important is flossing

In addition to brushing your teeth. The small gaps between your teeth and gums also contain microbes and plaque. Therefore we recommend flossing or using inter-dental brushes at least once a day to prevent getting cavities and gingivitis.

Have regular dental check-ups and cleans

bone loss

We recommend visiting every 6 months for routine check-ups and cleans. We can help detect problems in their early stages when they’re generally easier and more affordable to fix. Your oral health therapist will remove hardened calculus build-up that cannot be removed by brushing alone. It is important to remove the calculus which contains harmful bacteria that leads to tooth decay and periodontal disease. During your check-ups, your dentist will also look for signs of oral cancer for early detection.

Rinsing out your mouth after eating and drinking

Rinse your mouth water after eating and drinking to help neutralise acids and reduce staining on your teeth. Especially after having coffee, tea, and red wines.

Choose healthy foods

Select foods that are free from sugar and help your teeth stay strong.

Don’t smoke or vape

Smoking and vaping increase the risk of oral cancer and also reduces saliva production which also leads to bad breath.

Use mouthguards for contact sports.

Having a custom mouth guard to protect your teeth from getting damaged when playing contact sports.

Wear night splints

You may not realize it but most people grind and clench their teeth at night. We offer custom night splints made to fit you. This will help to prevent your teeth from wearing away prematurely as well as preventing them from fracturing.
